RWTH Aachen University Print E-mail

SSN1RWTH Aachen University was established in 1870. Today, with approximately 30,000 students and 6500 staff, it is the leading University of Technology in Germany.

It is a member of the elite IDEA-League, a strategic partnership of five of Europe's leading research universities of technology, including Imperial College London in UK, Delft University  in the Netherlands, ETH Zurich University in Switzerland and Paris Tech in France.

In 2007, RWTH Aachen University was awarded the title of "University of Excellence" by the German Council of Science and Humanities in recognition of the University's on-going outstanding research activities. Only a handful of institutions have received this prestigious honour, which brings with it significant additional funds to enable RWTH to expand in the future.

RWTH Aachen University is characterised by an interdisciplinary approach with a strong linkage between university and industry. The curricula taught at RWTH aims at developing a solid foundation in scientific subjects which enables the students to then apply their knowledge to engineering, economic and society-related issues. In the engineering faculties up to 80% of professors are recruited from industry due to the academic staff having both a strong scientific and industrial background.

A very important benchmark for the successful research activities of RWTH Aachen University is the third-party funding it secures. Aachen is proud to be the institution of Higher Education that has been awarded the greatest number of third party funding     in recent years.  Numerous international research institutions have settled in the Aachen region because of the availability of highly qualified researchers and graduates in engineering and science.

Due to the spirit of innovation at RWTH Aachen University a large number of start-up companies have been founded in the last 25 years - turning the local region into what has been labelled the "German Silicon Valley".

In 1999 RWTH Aachen University established the RWTH Aachen International Academy, offering courses for companies - from short term to complete master programmes - in the particular fields of engineering, management and dentistry.

Within the internationalisation strategy of RWTH Aachen University, the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) is the latest milestone. The academic and administrative strengths of RWTH Aachen University support the need for qualified graduates in Oman to ensure the country is prepared to meet the challenges of the future.
