The following frequently asked questions should answer your enquiries however, if you have any further questions please don't hesitate in contacting a member of the Registration and Student Affairs team or Marketing and PR team on 24 49 30 51 ext 206, 218, 204 or 214. The questions and answers have been split into sections, click on the section title relevant to your enquiry.
Q - Which programmes do you offer? Firstly, you need to check the entrance requirements for our programmes. If you don't meet the criteria for direct entry onto one of our Bachelor Programmes, then our Pre-University Programme is designed to help prepare students for further study. Successful completion of the Pre-University programme can lead to entry on to one of our Bachelor programmes. Q - Are part-time programmes available at GUtech? Currently we have no part-time provision but we plan to make part-time study available in the near future. Q - What programmes will GUtech introduce next? The University is committed to providing the skills required to ensure the sustainable development of Oman and the region. We are in the process of introducing three new programmes that have been identified as important sectors for Oman's continued success. We are expecting to introduce Engineering degree programmes at GUtech next year and plan to offer MSc and PhD studies.

Q - Can I pay my tuition fees by installment? Yes, you can pay in either two or three instalments. Within three weeks of receiving your application we will inform you if your application has been successful, and send an offer letter containing the following information:
If you are awaiting the results of your IGCSE or other relevant examinations, the University might issue a conditional offer letter, based on academic transcripts and/or projected results. The offer letter will be sent to you by email and a hard copy will be posted to your mailing address. Please provide us with your mailing address. Q - Does the university provide accommodation for students? Currently, the university can help students find suitable accommodation. The new main campus will offer purpose build accommodation for students.
Q - Are all lecturers German nationals? GUtech is proud of its multicultural staff - we have an international team of lecturers from Oman, Germany, Britain, Canada, the Netherlands, Russia and India. All of the professors responsible for the degree programmes are German.
Q - Can you tell me a little more about RWTH Aachen University? RWTH Aachen University was established in 1870. Today RWTH Aachen University has approximately 30,000 students, of which 5,400 are from overseas. With over 4000 academic staff and more than 2500 non-academic staff, RWTH Aachen University is the leading University of Technology in Germany. It is a member of the elite IDEA-League, a strategic partnership of five of Europe's leading research universities of technology, including Imperial College London in the UK, Delft University in the Netherlands, ETH Zurich University in Switzerland and ParisTech in France. In 2007, RWTH Aachen University was awarded the title of University of Excellence by the German Council of Science and Humanities in recognition of the University' s on-going outstanding research activities. Only nine of Germany's 360 universities were awarded this title. This not only emphasized the unique position of the university, but it also brought with it additional funding to expand this role in the future. RWTH Aachen University is characterised by an interdisciplinary approach and there are strong links between university and industry. The curricula taught at Aachen University aims at developing a solid foundation in scientific subjects which then enables students to apply their knowledge to engineering, economic and society-related problems. A key benchmark for the successful research of RWTH Aachen University is third-party funding. Aachen is proud to be the institution of Higher Education that has been awarded the most third-party funding in Germany in recent years. In addition numerous international research institutions have settled in the Aachen region because of the availability of highly qualified researchers and graduates in engineering and science. Due to the innovation strength of RWTH Aachen University a large number of start-up companies have been founded over the last 25 years - turning the local region into a "German Silicon Valley". In 1999 RWTH Aachen University established the RWTH Aachen International Academy which offered courses specifically tailored for companies - from short term to complete master programmes in the fields of engineering, management and dentistry. Within the internationalization strategy of RWTH Aachen University the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) is the latest milestone. The academic and administrative strength of RWTH Aachen University supports the needs of the Sultanate of Oman's society for qualified graduates, so that the country is prepared to meet the challenges of the future. See RWTH Aachen University for more detailed information Q - Is it possible to study at RWTH Aachen during the BSc studies at GUtech? All BSc programmes at RWTH Aachen are in taught in German. Transferring is not possible without adequate German language skills. We recommend that students complete their Bachelor studies at GUtech before going on to further study at RWTH Aachen. However, Bachelor students at GUtech will have opportunity to visit RWTH Aachen as part of their studies.
Q - Where is the University located? The German University of Technology in Oman is presently located in Muscat, Athaibah. Location map Q - Do you have plans to move to a new campus? Currently GUtech is located in central Muscat, in the Athaibah area. This base has been our Foundation Campus since opening in 2007. However, as a dynamic institution GUtech has grown in numbers and reputation since opening and is now ready to move to an interim campus. Our temporary new campus will provide more classroom space and improved facilities in line with our vision of becoming one of the leading universities of technology in the region. We expect to move to the interim campus in 2009/2010. GUtech is delighted to announce that the plans for our Main Campus, in the Halban area are close to completion and we expect to move there within the next few years. This purpose built campus will be conveniently accessible from the new Northern expressway. It will provide cutting edge facilities including laboratories, a library, and dedicated student accommodation, not to mention state of the art leisure and study facilities for students. Using environmentally friendly building and construction methods, in line with traditional Omani architecture and design, the new campus is set to become synonymous with the high-quality education, research and innovation on offer at GUtech. Q - Is the language of tuition German? English is the language of tuition at GUtech. However, German language classes are offered as an elective to Foundation Year students. All BSc students must undertake German language classes as part of their degree programme once they have reached an IELTS level of 7.0.
Q - Does the University accept non-Omani students? GUtech welcomes both Omani and non-Omani students. Q - My English level is not equivalent to an IELTS score of 4.5 or a TOEFL score of 480 - can I still apply to the University? Yes, you can apply. Admission is based on your General Education Certificate (or equivalent) results and the minimum entry requirements for each programme. As English is the language of instruction, your English language proficiency will be tested and you may need to enrol in the Intensive English Programme (IEP).
Q - Can I transfer from another institution to GUtech? Yes, you can transfer to GUtech if you satisfy our entry requirements. Please contact the Registration & Student Affairs department on 24 49 30 51 ext 218 or 206 for more information. It is also possible to transfer previous academic credit. Please note that only courses relevant to our programmes of study can be transferred. Government sponsored students who wish to transfer to GUtech must explore the possibility with their sponsor. Please note that a petition of transfer credit must be completed at the time of submitting your application for admission. You should attach to your petition course descriptions and course syllabus and return it to Registration and Student Affairs.
Q - Will the University help me out find a job after graduation? Yes, our staff will work with you to determine what career might be appropriate for you. The University also provides workshops on producing resumes and cover letters, job search strategies and interviews skills.
