Overview

Engineers work to improve the quality of life for people, not just in Oman, but throughout the world. They utilize their knowledge of scientific principles in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, etc., as well as their experience and curiosity, to find suitable solutions to problems or to develop more innovative solutions than the ones currently available.

Since Engineering is a very wide field, it is commonly subdivided into more specialized areas. The following Engineering disciplines are currently taught at GUtech:

• Mechanical Engineering
• Process Engineering
• Environmental Engineering

Engineers with these backgrounds are required across all fields in our industrialized world, such as the automotive, aerospace, marine, and communication sectors, in petroleum, chemical and steel industries, and in production, manufacturing and management. There will always be a local and global demand for well-trained engineers.

Successful Engineers not only require a deep understanding of basic sciences and mathematics, they are required to work well in teams and to use “hand-on” practical approaches to solve problems. The curriculum at GUtech, following that of our close affiliate RWTH Aachen, a university world-renowned for its Engineering programmes, focuses on this area with Project Work I & II courses in the first year, along with several group projects throughout the study program. In addition, final year students complete an Industrial Internship and they have an opportunity to design, build and test a device in their Bachelors thesis.

I invite you to explore the pages of the Engineering Department to find out more about our degree programmes.

Dr.Ing. Najah Al Mhanna
Head of the Department of Engineering
Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science

Programmes
  • BEng. Mechanical Engineering

It is the task of a Mechanical Engineer to develop highly specialized machines through the creative application of fundamental scientific principles, in order to solve problems in almost all industrial fields of application. At GUtech, you will learn the basic fundamental scientific principles (e.g. Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as well as Programming and Computer Aided Design) in your first 4 semesters.

After this, you will study more specialized subjects such as Heat and Mass Transfer, Control and Automation, Machine Tools and Design, Production Technology, Simulation Techniques, and Material Science, as well as completing an Industrial Internship and Bachelors thesis, to fully prepare you for a Professional Career as a Mechanical Engineer.

  • BEng. Process Engineering

Process Engineers are required to develop highly specialized processes through the creative application of fundamental scientific principles, in order to solve problems in a vast range of industries, which includes the oil production and refinery, petrochemical, mineral processing, agriculture, food, and pharmaceutical industries. At GUtech, you will learn the basic fundamental scientific principles (e.g. Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as well as Programming and Computer Aided Design) in your first 4 semesters.

After this, you will study more specialized subjects such as Heat and Mass Transfer, Control and Automation, Plant Design, Petroleum and Petrochemical Processing, Chemical Process Engineering, Mechanical Process Engineering, Thermal Separation Processes, Multi-Phase Flow, Simulation Techniques, and Material Science, as well as completing an Industrial Internship and Bachelors thesis, to fully prepare you for a Professional Career as a Process Engineer.

  • BEng. Environmental Engineering

It is the task of an Environmental Engineer to develop specialized solutions to environmental problems through the creative application of fundamental scientific principles, in order to protect human populations and the environment from harmful natural and human activities, and to satisfy the environmental needs of the people of the Sultanate and wider region. At GUtech, you will learn the basic fundamental scientific principles (e.g. Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as well as Programming, and Environmental Law) in your first 4 semesters.

After this, you will study more specialized subjects such as Hydrology and Water Resources, Sea Water Desalination, Green Building, Light and Noise Pollution, Air Pollution Control, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, Solid Waste Management, Integrated Water Resources Management, Simulation Techniques and Material Science, as well as completing an Industrial Internship and Bachelors thesis, to fully prepare you for a Professional Career as an Environmental Engineer.

  • MEng. in Industrial Production and Manufacturing

The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) and the University of Brescia in Italy collaborate to deliver the Master of Engineering in Industrial Production & Manufacturing (MEng IPM) at GUtech campus in Oman. The MEng programme focuses on two strategic sectors, namely material extraction and processing, and innovative, high automation and sustainable manufacturing. The programme enables students to gain a solid and in-depth knowledge in the field of extraction, production, testing and control of ferrous, non-ferrous and polymeric materials, the use of new advanced materials for component production, and plant logistics with a special focus on business development and entrepreneurship.
