Overview

GUtech wants to expand its superior programme offering in Bachelor and Master education to the doctoral level. Like the Bachelor programmes, all Master programmes and Doctoral programmes will be accredited by international accreditation agencies to guarantee compliance with international standards, in particular the standards stipulated in the regulations of the Bologna process.

The students at GUtech will benefit from an applied scientific education, close linkage to industry, and an early integration of education and research.

As a first step, this proposal is for a Doctoral programme in Computer Science as this is the area in which we have already graduated Master students (Master of Science in Computer Science).

A PhD programme significantly increases our academic reputation worldwide. The programme contributes to the capacity building for the industry (research and development), and also to Oman’s academic community by offering the opportunity to study for doctoral level qualifications without having to leave Oman. The doctoral programme will increase the number of research publications and international conference contributions that originate from within Oman. Omanis participating in the programme will be introduced by their supervisors to the international academic community. Omanis working in industry have the opportunity to gain an internationally recognized doctoral degree in the Sultanate.

The vision of the PhD in Computer Science is to prepare doctoral students for leadership roles in Omani universities and / or in industry in order to foster research and development in Oman.

The Doctoral programme in Computer Science at GUtech is tailored to the requirements of Oman and the region, building on state-of-the-art expertise in the Master programme of Computer Science at GUtech. It is planned to be organized as a full- (or in cases where students have a job also as part)-time programme, open for candidates with internationally accredited Master degrees in relevant fields of study and industry experience. This will enable a majority of GUtech’s graduates to follow on up with a PhD degree, while working in academic research and/or in industry.

The programme in Oman focuses on areas which are of key importance to the region’s present and future, including Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, and Blockchain. Many elements of the programme will be accomplished in cooperation with local and international partners from universities and companies.

A PhD in Computer Science opens up a lot of possibilities in Oman—both in academia, research, and in industry—especially as the country seeks to diversify its economy, advance technology infrastructure, and build more high‑value domestic capabilities (in line with Oman Vision 2040). Below are key opportunities by category:

  • Universities: Become an academic staff in a university.
  • Research Institutions: Conduct fundamental or applied research; work with centers and labs focusing on emerging fields; publish; possibly collaborate with international research projects.
  • Industrial R&D / Private Sector: Work as research scientist, data scientist, ML/AI specialist, systems architect, cybersecurity expert, etc.; lead innovation within tech‑companies; possibly develop startup technologies; design and implement advanced systems.
  • Government & Public Sector: Policy planning related to ICT; cybersecurity agencies; national data infrastructure; digital transformation; e‑governance; regulation and oversight; advising.
  • Consultancy: Advising companies or government on specialized areas (cybersecurity, AI strategy, data privacy, large‑scale systems, cloud infrastructure); contracting work.
  • Entrepreneurship / Startups: Using research as a foundation to develop new products or services; spin‑offs; tech startups; possibly commercialization of innovations.
  • University Graduate Attributes and Skills

Key attributes build on the purpose and the core values of the University and are listed below:

  • Ethics – The graduates have developed awareness and holistic understanding of their role as responsible citizens in an increasingly globalised context;
  • Critical thinking and problem solving – The graduates are able to engage real-world problems in a theoretically informed, rigorous, and questioning manner. They are able to devise solutions, select the most appropriate one, implement it, and reflect on its performance.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

Before a student can admit to a PhD programme, he/she needs the agreement from a professor of the faculty to supervise a specific research topic. We encourage candidates from the industry to propose industry-relevant applied research topics. Professors from the faculty will announce regularly externally funded research assistant positions suitable for graduates without industry experience. In any case, the research topic requires the formal approval of the Head of Department.

Admission into GUtech’s PhD in Computer Science is open for Master degree graduates. If you meet our academic and language requirements, you are invited to apply online.

Academic Requirements
