Water Reuse Measurement and Management at GUtech for Sustainable Campus Operations

The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) actively promotes sustainable water management across its campus. Approximately 51,013 cubic meters of treated water from its Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) are reused annually for irrigation, supplying lawns, trees, and other green spaces.

Reused water used to irrigate trees and grass

The university employs drip irrigation for trees and sprinklers for grass, ensuring efficient water application. Water use is carefully tracked and monitored, enabling the university to optimise consumption and identify opportunities for further conservation.

By systematically monitoring its water consumption, the university not only reduces overall usage but also decreases dependence on external water supplies. This approach lowers operational costs while demonstrating the university’s strong commitment to sustainable resource management, an issue of particular importance in Oman, where water scarcity is a critical national challenge.

Moreover, GUtech’s water-reuse policy serves as a practical model for responsible resource conservation. It aligns not only with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) but also with the pillars of Oman Vision 2040, which emphasize efficient water use, environmental sustainability, and long-term resilience in the face of the country’s limited freshwater resources.
