Prof. Dr. Wilfried Bauer (German University of Technology in Oman, Sultanate of Oman)

Dr. Bauer earned his PhD in Geology from RWTH Aachen University in 1995. He continued his academic career at Aachen from 1995 to 2002, initially as a Postdoctoral Researcher and later as a Research Assistant. His research focused on structural geology, metamorphic petrology, mineral chemistry, and geochronology of Precambrian metamorphic rocks, particularly in high-grade gneiss terranes of the East Antarctic Craton and the Ural Mountains. In 2004, Dr. Bauer worked with the commercial arm of the Norwegian Geological Survey, NORCONSULT, on a mapping project covering four sheets of the 1:250,000 geological map of Mozambique.

From 2005 to 2007, he served as a Senior Survey Geologist at the British Geological Survey, where he was the deputy leader of a team responsible for mapping and compiling 92 sheets of the 1:100,000 scale geological map of Madagascar, as part of a World Bank-funded project. Between 2007 and 2014, Dr Bauer led the Research & Development section of an Australian exploration company focused on gold, bauxite, and graphite exploration in Madagascar.

In February 2015, Dr. Bauer joined the German University of Technology in Oman, where he held several academic leadership roles. From 2017 to 2025, he was Head of the Department of Applied Geosciences, and from 2020 to 2025, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Science. His research and teaching interests include structural geology, petrology, shear zone textures, and mineral exploration. In February 2025, Dr. Bauer was appointed Deputy Rector for Academic Affairs at GUtech.
