The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech), in collaboration with Oman LNG, is undertaking a strategic research and development initiative focused on climate change mitigation through landscape-based carbon capture and storage. This project is funded by Oman LNG in the framework of the EJAAD Funding Programme, which supports innovation aligned with Oman Vision 2040, national sustainability goals and energy transition goals.
According to the architects AE Friends, the primary objective of this project is to design and implement a scalable, urban green landscape strategy that leverages the natural carbon sequestration potential of native tree and plant species in Oman. These species, selected for their resilience to local environmental conditions, serve as an effective solution to atmospheric carbon reduction while contributing positively to ecological health, urban aesthetics, and public well-being.
The project’s mission is to establish scientifically informed guidelines and a regulatory framework for monitoring carbon capture using natural systems. This includes data collection standards, and decision-making tools to support the integration of nature-based solutions into urban development, infrastructure planning, and environmental policy with strong focus on carbon capture.
A key feature of this initiative is the development of pilot modular landscape units—prototype green spaces designed to demonstrate the application of carbon-smart principles at a manageable scale. These units will serve as reference models for similar projects throughout the Sultanate and potentially the wider region.
The project is grounded in three fundamental principles:
- Carbon capture using local native trees
- Water Resource Management
- Soil Resource Management
This collaboration between GUtech and Oman LNG are advancing a groundbreaking initiative that goes beyond traditional environmental conservation. This project is directly aligned with the goals of Oman Vision 2040 and SDGs 2030, contributing to the country’s broader objectives of sustainable development and climate action.
