GUtech collaboration with local authorities

1. HOPE Initiative

As part of its commitment to Oman Vision 2040 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities), the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) co-leads the HOPE – Housing, People, and Environment initiative.

Launched under the auspices of HH Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham Al Said, HOPE serves as a national platform to promote people-centered urban planning and to address affordable, healthy, and inclusive housing in Oman. The initiative brings together GUtech researchers, the Ministry of Health’s Healthy Cities Program, and local municipalities to design evidence-based planning solutions that improve quality of life.

In HOPE24 (2024), GUtech organized a symposium, site visits, and training workshops in Nizwa and Barka in collaboration with local government planners, policy makers, and technical staff. These activities focused on transforming residential neighborhoods into more walkable, health-promoting environments through better urban design and public space accessibility.

The project’s outcomes are being shared with decision-makers and urban planners to inform local housing and development policies and inspire replication across Oman’s municipalities.

2. Strategic Collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning

Ministry-of-housing

The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning to enhance collaboration in training, education, and research. Through this partnership, the university supports the Ministry’s efforts in urban development and planning, which include promoting sustainable and affordable housing solutions aligned with Oman’s national development goals.
