The German University of Technology in Oman GUtech, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, organised a workshop entitled “Transforming Towards a Smart and Sustainable Green Campus”, held under the patronage and in the presence of Her Excellency Professor Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and attended by Professor Michael Braun, President of the German University of Technology in Oman, alongside a distinguished group of academics, decision-makers, and experts in sustainability and smart technologies.
The workshop aimed to promote sustainability concepts and smart transformation within higher education institutions, while showcasing best practices that enhance campus efficiency, optimise resource utilisation, and support environmentally responsible development, in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
In her address, Her Excellency emphasised that the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation is committed to supporting the transition towards smart and green university campuses, aligned with the national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. She highlighted the importance of improving energy efficiency, deploying digital technologies, and strengthening environmental sustainability across higher education institutions, contributing to innovative and future-ready learning environments.
The workshop included visual presentations delivered by GUtech, Huawei, Omantel, and the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. Her Excellency highlighted the strategic importance of sustainability-driven transformation in higher education, while the University President reaffirmed GUtech’s commitment to adopting smart and green campus solutions through innovation, partnership, and knowledge exchange.
For his part, Professor Michael Braun stressed the University’s dedication to international best practices in sustainable campus development and the strengthening of academic and research partnerships that support long-term environmental and technological transformation.
The workshop forms part of GUtech’s ongoing efforts to embed sustainability within its academic and research ecosystem, reinforce the concept of smart and green campuses, and contribute effectively to Oman’s sustainable development goals.
