Towards A Sustainable Smart Tourism Destination: Analyzing the Readiness of the Sultanate of Oman Cities
Abstract

It is positioned at the intersection of sustainable tourism development, economic diversification, and information technology, aligning with the priorities of Oman Vision 2040. Oman has identified tourism as one of the key industries to drive economic diversification, leveraging its rich cultural heritage to attract visitors. Oman Vision 2040 outlines a comprehensive strategy for sustainable economic development, with a strong emphasis on sustainable tourism. Aligned with Oman Vision 2040’s goal of using technology for economic diversification, this research will investigate how information technology can be utilized to create smart tourism destinations that offer immersive and sustainable experiences for visitors. By examining the current state of tourism infrastructure, community and tourist perceptions, and opportunities for sustainable site management in Omani cities, this study seeks to identify ways in which technology can enhance the competitiveness and appeal of these destinations. Moreover, this research is in line with national priorities of Oman Vision 2040’s including the development of governorates and sustainable cities, economic diversification and sustainability, and a sustainable environment, through promoting sustainable practices in tourism development. By leveraging information technology to enhance visitor satisfaction, optimize resource management, and promote community engagement, this research aims to ensure that tourism development in Omani cities is not only economically viable but also socially and environmentally responsible. The project will include initiatives such as Virtual Reality tours, a smart tourism training program, and awareness workshops in collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, and governorates.
